A remarkable new species of Cheilolejeunea (Marchantiophyta: Lejeuneaceae) from Colombia Boletín de la Sociedad
Gradstein,S. Robbert; Reiner-Drehwald,M. Elena.
We describe the new liverwort species Cheilolejeunea schiavoneana M.E.Reiner & Gradst. from submontane rainforest in the Western Cordillera of Colombia. The new species is related to C. adnata (C. sect. Cheilolejeunea) but differs by larger plant, leaf and underleaf size, robust stems, a 5-6 cells wide ventral merophyte, abundance of microphyllous branches, and vegetative reproduction by caducous leaf lobes produced on flagelliform shoots. The latter feature is characteristic of the genus Rectolejeunea and its presence in Cheilolejeunea is apparently a case of parallel evolution. The discovery of C. schiavoneana adds a further endemic taxon to the rich flora of the Colombian Western Cordillera.

A retrospective study on the diagnosis of clostridial myonecrosis in ruminants in Brazil Ciência Rural
Pires,Prhiscylla Sadanã; Ecco,Roselene; Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira; Araújo,Marina Rios de; Salvarani,Felipe Masiero; Heneine,Luíz Guilherme Dias; Oliveira Júnior,Carlos Augusto de; Lobato,Francisco Carlos Faria.
ABSTRACT: A standardized immunochemistry method for the diagnosis of clostridial myonecrosis was applied to 38 formalized tissue samples from ruminants with clinical and post mortem history suggestive of blackleg or gas gangrene. The diagnosis of clostridial myonecrosis was confirmed in 37 out of 38 (97.4%) samples tested. Clostridium chauvoei and Clostridium perfringens type A were the most common agents found alone, being detected in ten (26.3%) and six (15.8%) samples, respectively. The other cases showed an association of two or three clostridia, with C. perfringens type A detected in 11 (29%) cases. Based on the findings of the present study, polyvalent vaccines against clostridial infections of animals incorporating C. perfringens would be more...

A review of capture and post-release mortality of elasmobranchs ArchiMer
Ellis, J. R.; Phillips, S. R. Mccully; Poisson, Francois.
There is a need to better understand the survivorship of discarded fishes, both for commercial stocks and species of conservation concern. Within European waters, the landing obligations that are currently being phased in as part of the European Union's reformed common fisheries policy means that an increasing number of fish stocks, with certain exceptions, should not be discarded unless it can be demonstrated that there is a high probability of survival. This study reviews the various approaches that have been used to examine the discard survival of elasmobranchs, both in terms of at-vessel mortality (AVM) and post-release mortality (PRM), with relevant findings summarized for both the main types of fishing gear used and by taxonomic group. Discard...

A review on plant importance, biotechnological aspects, and cultivation challenges of jojoba plant Biol. Res.
Al-Obaidi,Jameel R.; Halabi,Mohammed Farouq; AlKhalifah,Nasser S.; Asanar,Shanavaskhan; Al-Soqeer,Abdulrahman A.; Attia,M. F..
Abstract Jojoba is considered a promising oil crop and is cultivated for diverse purposes in many countries. The jojoba seed produces unique high-quality oil with a wide range of applications such as medical and industrial-related products. The plant also has potential value in combatting desertification and land degradation in dry and semi-dry areas. Although the plant is known for its high-temperature and high-salinity tolerance growth ability, issues such as its male-biased ratio, relatively late flowering and seed production time hamper the cultivation of this plant. The development of efficient biotechnological platforms for better cultivation and an improved production cycle is a necessity for farmers cultivating the plant. In the last 20 years, many...

A revision of the genus Actephila (Phyllanthaceae) in the Malesian region Naturalis
Heijkoop, M.; Welzen, P.C. van.
The genus Actephila (Phyllanthaceae) is distributed from India in the north-west to Thailand and via Malesia to the Melanesian Islands and Australia in the south-east. Eleven species are recognized of which three are newly described, A. discoidea with long leaf apices and a fleshy nectar discs, A. emarginata with an emarginate leaf base, and A. stipularis with large stipules. Further, A. javanica is synonymized with A. excelsa; and a former synonym or separate variety, A. excelsa var. acuminata, is recognized as distinct species, but had to be synonymized under A. subsessilis. Actephila puberula, not present in Malesia, but often synonymized with A. excelsa, is kept separate because of the hairy ovary and different base of the leaf blades.

A simple and efficient method for poly-3-hydroxybutyrate quantification in diazotrophic bacteria within 5 minutes using flow cytometry BJMBR
Alves,L.P.S.; Almeida,A.T.; Cruz,L.M.; Pedrosa,F.O.; de Souza,E.M.; Chubatsu,L.S.; Müller-Santos,M.; Valdameri,G..
The conventional method for quantification of polyhydroxyalkanoates based on whole-cell methanolysis and gas chromatography (GC) is laborious and time-consuming. In this work, a method based on flow cytometry of Nile red stained bacterial cells was established to quantify poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) production by the diazotrophic and plant-associated bacteria, Herbaspirillum seropedicae and Azospirillum brasilense. The method consists of three steps: i) cell permeabilization, ii) Nile red staining, and iii) analysis by flow cytometry. The method was optimized step-by-step and can be carried out in less than 5 min. The final results indicated a high correlation coefficient (R2=0.99) compared to a standard method based on methanolysis and GC. This method...

A Simple Kit of Plate-Trapped Antigen Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay for Identification of Plant Viruses Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Nascimento,Aline Kelly Queiróz; Lima,José Albersio Araújo; Barbosa,Graziela da Silva.
ABSTRACT Many methods can be used for arriving in a correct virus disease diagnose, and the serological techniques are the most used methods for plant virus identification. The indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Indirect-ELISA) or plate-trapped antigen ELISA (PTA-ELISA) has been useful for detection of viruses in a wide range of situations, especially to test a large number of samples in a relatively short period of time. Immune-biological Companies have developed practical kits for direct ELISA or double antibody sandwich (DAS-ELISA), but neither Company has developed kits for PTA-ELISA. As a single universal antibody-conjugate is used for detection of a wide range of plant viruses, the PTA-ELISA technique is more economical, practical and...

A spleen tyrosine kinase inhibitor attenuates the proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells Biol. Res.
Seo,Hyang‑Hee; Kim,Sang Woo; Lee,Chang Youn; Lim,Kyu Hee; Lee,Jiyun; Choi,Eunhyun; Lim,Soyeon; Lee,Seahyoung; Hwang,Ki‑Chul.
Abstract Background Pathologic vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation and migration after vascular injury promotes the development of occlusive vascular disease. Therefore, an effective chemical agent to suppress aberrant proliferation and migration of VSMCs can be a potential therapeutic modality for occlusive vascular disease such as atherosclerosis and restenosis. To find an anti-proliferative chemical agent for VSMCs, we screened an in-house small molecule library, and the selected small molecule was further validated for its anti-proliferative effect on VSMCs using multiple approaches, such as cell proliferation assays, wound healing assays, transwell migration assays, and ex vivo aortic ring assay. Results Among 43 initially screened...

A SUBADULT MAXILLA OF A TYRANNOSAURIDAE FROM THE TWO MEDICINE FORMATION, MONTANA, UNITED STATES Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
DELCOURT,RAFAEL.
ABSTRACT Daspletosaurus is a Campanian genus of Tyrannosauridae from North America. This genus occupied the same geographic area of Albertosaurus, but remains of Albertosaurus are more abundant than Daspletosaurus. Here is described a subadult maxilla (AMNH FARB 5477) of Daspletosaurus sp. from Montana (USA) and possibly from the Two Medicine Formation. The description is based on Carr (1999) that described cranial ontogenetic variations in tyrannosaurids. The maxilla belongs to the ontogenetic Stage 3 sensu Carr (1999), in which the maxilla is thick, the lateral surface of the bone well sculptured, and the maxillary fenestra is subcircular and well separated from the anterior edge of antorbital fossa. Possibly there were more than one species of...
